Study Week 155: Phil. 3:1-14, "Come Hungry"
Week of June 26, 2011

We are hard wired to eat food.  Hunger tells us it's time to eat ... or else!  We can only go so many days without food or water before we call it a day --- I mean, a life! If we wait too long before eating or drinking, well --- it's "adios," "hasta la vista," "arrivederci," "au revoir" ... you get the point.  If we go too long without spending time with God, there's a downside.  Think about it!

In last Sunday's sermon, Greg asked the probing question:  Do you hunger for God?  Do you long for communion with the Creator as badly as you long for a hamburger after fasting for 7 days ... or 14 days ... or 40 days?  How badly do you covet time with God?  The consequence of fasting without God is much more dire than fasting and foregoing food.

Do you come to church on Sunday hungry for God?

What a great question!

Jesus hungered for communion with the Father.  Over and over in the gospels, we read about Jesus going out to a quiet place to pray.  He fasted and prayed.  He was hungry for time with the Father.  The Father enjoyed time with the Son.  "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased."  And together, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit enjoy holy communion.  E.g., Luke 3:21-22.

So, how do you "get hungry" for God?  That hunger should be the propulsion that drives us full steam ahead through life.  Well, praying is a good first step.  And after that, pondering.  And after pondering, pursuing.  These are three strong verbs that make a world of difference.  Greg discusses them at length in his sermon.

Listen to Greg's sermon again by going to Malibu Pres' website, www.malibupres.org.  You can listen to the audio version of the sermon by clicking on the icon in the upper left corner of our web page.

If you've already heard the sermon, join with your Life Group and study the related bible study that is attached to this blog.

Enjoy each other's company and the presence of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Blessings, and have a great day.
