Risk and Community: Coming to Life in the Amazon

October 5, 2011

Most of us seem hardwired for safety and thinking in terms of I rather than We. Whether these behaviors come out of cultural scripts wired from an early age or simply, the fallen human heart, I've noticed how my default setting is for what's known, tested, and requires little faith. And no matter how much I value the experience of community, my default setting is to frame life and the pursuits of life within the very small box of me, myself and I.

Using One's Vocation for the Glory of God

March 22, 2010

Chelsea.jpg
Member Chelsea Hoffman is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital. Recently she was featured in a UCLA newspaper about her passion to bring comfort and healing to others. Chelsea has been part of our last two mission trips to Brazil, where she has used her gifts and heart to bring healing to people along the Amazon. Chelsea is an awesome example of someone who represents the hands of Christ to the world. She says, "I feel like I've been called to pour as much of myself into these kids and families as I can, to hopefully improve their quality of life, whatever direction it takes."

Please pray for Chelsea as she continues to walk alongside others in their pain and as she models and represents Christ at UCLA and to her many patients and families.

How to Succeed in Mission without Losing Your Soul

December 15, 2009

What are you building? Many us work feverishly to build our homes, careers, accomplishments and mini-Empires. As American babies, we all seem to have operating instructions attached to our wrinkly, new-born feet:

This baby is intended to: a) go to school and learn what works and how to succeed b) build until successful c) retire with numerous award plaques.

We all know how this story ends though. Right? Tis' the season for stories like It's A Wonderful Life and Scrooge (You need to see the Zemeckis remake if you haven't!) Hollywood absolutely gets it. But as Christians, do we truly set our minds and hearts on building for a different Kingdom, rather than the one which only ends in bitterness, relational separation and Scrooge cursing joy-filled carolers in the street?

Building contractors and architects sure must love reading the Bible. The Old Testament is full of people building things. Of course, many of those things are built out of people's desire to succeed and build up their own empire, rather than God's. Take the Tower of Babel for instance. In ancient Sumer, those builders were determined to not only build for themselves, but out-build God.

Following the flood, God had commanded the descendants of the ark to "...fill the earth" (Genesis 9:1). Instead, and in rebellion, the people built the tower to "reach the heavens," just in case God decided to wipe the world of sinful humanity once again. With flying hammers and fresh mortar, they  built "to make a name for themselves" (Genesis 11:4).

Is Malibu Pres feverishly working just to make a name for ourselves? I don't think so. By God's grace and mercy, and through our obedience, we are building for the Kingdom. We helped restore a broken building in downtown LA, so teenagers might come to know the Lord. We built a 300 square foot church in nowhere Baja so empty-handed villagers might come to hold Christ near. And our base camp is now a glorified tent, not to our glory, but for eternal glory to God. The empires we build for ourselves will certainly fade. So instead of counting dimes, invite Scrooge over for dinner this Christmas. That kind of building will never perish.

Malibu Pres Returns to Brazil

Thanks for your support and prayers for our team of 12 as we travel 10,000 miles back to the Amazon. Four of our team members return to Brazil after last year's mission and for the other eight, for many, will be their first mission trip!

A Psalm of Dying to Oneself in the Midst of a World Out of Control

February 27, 2009

I think we've all been there. Waking up at 4:30am with a racing heart - endless worry about (this is where you fill in the blank). Anxiety like this, it's awfully disconcerting. To in a moment wake from dead sleep with the realization that every single circumstance is outside of my control, is well, quite far from peace. More
