Despite having lost its own building to fire, Malibu Presbyterian Church will donate $500,000 to World Impact to build a teen center.  Villaraigosa will attend to celebrate.

The Los Angeles Mayor’s office has confirmed that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will attend Easter Services at Malibu Presbyterian Church on March 23rd, 2008 at 11:00 - currently scheduled to be held at Malibu Bluffs Park (24250 Pacific Coast Highway - for any changes, please check www.malibupres.org/easter).

On October 21st of last year, Malibu Presbyterian Church (MPC) was completely destroyed in a fire that damaged over 70 structures in the area and scarred thousands of acres of land.  The church site became a focal point for news coverage and was visited by Governor Schwarzenegger when he declared the region a disaster area.

Despite the loss of its building, MPC announced that it would follow through with their previous pledge from June 2007 to donate $500,000 to World Impact Ministries to build a teen center in central Los Angeles.

World Impact is a Christian missions organization committed to empowering America’s urban poor through Christian Schools, The Oaks Camp and Conference center (Lake Hughes, CA), medical and dental ministries, youth clubs, teen outreaches, mentoring, tutoring and church planting.  Since 1965, World Impact has ministered to the spiritual, social, physical and mental needs of its neighbors in the inner city of Los Angeles.

“Christianity is a resurrection faith,” said MPC’s Pastor Greg Hughes.  “We believe in a God who rose from death for us.  While we have lost a building, we are still a church.    We are proud to partner with World Impact.   Together, we work toward a common vision - to serve our community, help those in need and, in turn, bring Christ’s Love to the City of Los Angeles.  We cannot think of a better way to celebrate Easter than by helping World Impact.”

Dr. Keith Phillips, President of World Impact, says, “Malibu Presbyterian Church is a stellar example of Christian love--sacrificially giving to build a center to empower inner-city teenagers through encouragement, mentoring and instruction - even as their own sanctuary is in ashes.  Only God’s love can explain such extraordinary generosity.  On behalf of the teenagers in Los Angeles, we are extremely grateful.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Malibu Presbyterian Church was founded in the summer of 1949.  In 2007, the church conducted a capital campaign to raise money for renovations to its original building.

As a part of the capital campaign, MPC pledged to include a gift of $500,000 to World Impact to help build a teen center to serve the 3,000-student school across the street from World Impact’s headquarters in central Los Angeles.

Plans for the renovation were halted when fire destroyed the church in October last year.  Two days after the fire, the church leadership declared that it would honor its pledge to World Impact and proceed with the gift.

World Impact is converting a 9000-square-foot building to a community center for teens across the street from the new West Adams Preparatory High School, which opened in September 2007 at Vermont and the Santa Monica Freeway.  This center, scheduled to open in 2009, will provide Bible classes and worship classes. It will also offer academic tutoring, counseling, mentoring,  leadership development, drama productions, college SAT prep classes, vocational planning, and music classes.   It will be a safe place for inner-city teens to build deep, healthy relationships with their peers and World Impact staff.  Dr. Edward Robillard,West Adams Prep Principal, welcomes our positive investment into his student body.

“Malibu Presbyterian has stood as a beacon of hope for 58 years,” Pastor Hughes said.  “We are still here.  We love our city, and we intend to continue to worship and serve the Malibu and Los Angeles communities for decades to come.”
